The magnitude 5.7 earthquake that struck Jérémie on Tuesday, June 6th, is believed to be linked to "a reawakening of dormant faults in Grand'Anse," revealed engineer Claude Prépetit, Director of the Bureau of Mines and Energy (BME).
"On August 14th, 2021, the epicenter of the magnitude 7.2 earthquake was located in Les Nippes. The aftershocks have continued to occur around the epicentral area, and as of May 31st, 2023, it is estimated that there have been approximately 1,200 tremors. Since August 14th, 2021, the Jérémie area has also experienced seismic activities that are not considered direct aftershocks but rather the reawakening of faults in Grand'Anse. Jérémie is located approximately 100 km away from Les Nippes," he explained, highlighting the number of tremors recorded in the three departments of the Grand Sud since the earthquake on August 14th, 2021.
