The heatwave is affecting the health of the population. It raises the temperature of all organs in the human body simultaneously, preventing them from functioning normally. "The increase in temperature puts internal organs in danger overall. The body struggles to maintain a temperature of around 37 degrees to allow organs to function normally because it is directly affected by this warming, this heatwave," emphasized Dr. Karine Sévère. She also noted that the heat will have consequences on the environment, such as increased pollution.
Dr. Sévère advises the Haitian population to take precautions regarding this heatwave. She highlighted that the most vulnerable individuals are babies, the elderly, those with comorbidities, and people with asthma. "Signs of dehydration include sweating, difficulty breathing, dry mouth, and dry skin," she explained, encouraging people to stay hydrated regularly. "When we sweat, we not only lose water (H2O), but also other electrolytes like sodium, which is why it's important to drink juice, coconut water, and other fluids."
