The UN Security Council, via resolution 2692 (2023), voted unanimously to renew Binuh's mandate for a year, and asked Secretary-General Antonio Guteress "to submit a written report to the Council, in consultation with Haiti, within 30 days, outlining the range of support options that the UN can provide to improve the security situation, including support to combat illicit trafficking and detour of arms and related materiel, additional training for the Haitian National Police, support for a non-UN multinational force or possible peacekeeping operation, as part of support for a political settlement in Haiti," reads a UN statement.
The Security Council extended today the mandate of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (UNIOGH) until July 15, 2024, deciding that its police and corrections unit will include up to 70 civilian and seconded personnel serving as police and corrections advisors to increase its strategic and advisory support to the training and investigative capacities of the Haitian National Police, and that its human rights unit will include dedicated capabilities to combat sexual and gender-based violence, including the identification of advisors on the protection of women, reads a UN statement, Friday, July 14, 2023.
