Between April and June 2023, the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) reported documenting over 1,860 cases of murder, injuries, and kidnappings throughout the country. This represents an increase of nearly 14% in the number of victims compared to the previous quarter, from January to March 2023. After painting a dark picture of the country's situation, BINUH asserts that the "already greatly weakened police institution does not have the capacity to restore and maintain public order" and reiterates the deployment of a specialized support force in the country.
The gangs are plunging the country into chaos and bloodshed. With impunity, they kill, kidnap, rape, steal, and harm members of the civilian population everywhere and whenever they choose. In its quarterly report from April to June 2023, the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) documented over 1,860 cases of murder, injuries, and kidnappings throughout the country. The West Department remains at the forefront with the highest number of people killed, injured, and abducted, accounting for 82% of the recorded cases. "The municipalities of Cité Soleil, Croix-des-Bouquets, Pétion-Ville, and Port-au-Prince have been particularly affected. The expansion of violence has also continued in the Artibonite Department (13% of cases), notably in the municipalities of L'Estère, Liancourt, and Petite-Rivière de l'Artibonite," reports BINUH.
