"The patients who fail to adhere to their medication regimen pose not only a threat to themselves but also to the entire community," stressed Jean Ardouin Louis Charles, the director of the sanatorium. "The treatment for tuberculosis spans six months; when a person with tuberculosis doesn't consistently take their prescribed medication, they run the risk of developing drug resistance, rendering the treatment ineffective. At that juncture, the disease can spread to those in their vicinity. Moreover, those who contract tuberculosis from them will also develop a resistant strain that's challenging to treat. This is the risk," he emphasized during his appearance on the Panel Magik show on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.
In the case of HIV/AIDS, individuals afflicted with the disease can similarly develop resistance if they don't adhere to their medication schedule. "It becomes a significant problem when this specialized hospital cannot function, and there is no other hospital that can quickly replace it," Dr. Charles stated, taking the opportunity to address the criminals. "We will never cease to say that medical personnel are neutral. Even in war-torn countries, they are allowed to work. Unfortunately, in Haiti, this principle is not respected; ambulances are shot at. It must not be forgotten that they also need care; without the medical community, they cannot receive treatment. They are diminishing the life expectancy of Haitians. And we offer our services with blind eyes (without discrimination), caring solely about the suffering of our patients."
