Armed gangs do not only employ weapons of war to assault the population. Gang rape of women and girls is also a feared weapon used by the criminals. In the territories they control and in the areas they attack, rape, this inhumane and degrading practice, is enforced by the criminals to subdue the population. In its quarterly report (April-June 2023), the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) states that gangs continue to resort to sexual violence, especially gang rape and mutilation, to spread fear and punish populations under the control of their rivals.

"In mid-April, during an attack on the Brooklyn population (Cité Soleil), at least 49 women were raped by G-9 and allied elements in an area known as 'Déyè Mi' as they tried to escape armed violence. After being raped, seven of the victims were killed and their bodies dumped in an abandoned site. In this area, women and girls continued to be exposed daily to the risk of being raped by gang members as they tried to commute to work or access services," the BINUH report reads.
