The execution of the December 21 agreement is stalling. Former senator Sorel Jacinthe accuses the international community and suggests that Haitians should come together to reclaim their country. "Every time the actors sign an agreement and we prepare to implement it, the international community orders us to find a much broader consensus. We signed the September 11 agreement, and this demand was made; we signed the December 21 agreement, and the same demand was made. We see all the back and forth; we went to Jamaica, to Washington, a CARICOM delegation came to the country, as did the UN Secretary-General. They are seeking an agreement among Haitians. I won't say it prevents us from moving forward, but it represents a handicap because they don't want to be caught between two sides, the opposition and the government when they come to Haiti," explained the former parliamentarian during his participation in Panel Magik9 on Friday, September 1st.
Mr. Jacinthe gives a mixed response when asked if the agreement is still valid: "yes and no," he said, emphasizing that CARICOM continues negotiations with all parties to reach a consensus. "The December 21 agreement needs a broader consensus. We need more people, more sectors; the opposition needs to take a step, and the rest of us need to take many steps to achieve unity among us. It is at that point that we will be able to implement the agreement," he elaborated.
