25 years after the arrival of the first Cuban medical brigade in Haiti and 18 years since Cuba sent batches of Haitian doctors back to Haiti, Le Nouvelliste revisits the results of this cooperation, which is now at a standstill and has not quite lived up to its initial promise.
The number of Cuban healthcare professionals present in Haiti in 2023 does not exceed 200, with 77 doctors primarily practicing in the southern region of the country. The "miracle operation" no longer functions, some hospitals are closed, and Norway no longer finances the "comprehensive health plan" in the same way. Cuban medical cooperation in Haiti exists in name only and is reactivated in case of natural disasters.
