It's 1:00 PM at the Toussaint Louverture International Airport on Monday, October 30th. Passengers, sitting on the floor, wear gloomy expressions, passing the time in the hope of receiving good news. The news of the suspension of Haiti to Nicaragua flights hit them like a bombshell. Some have sold everything to leave their homeland for Nicaragua, then Mexico, before reaching their final destination: the USA. The passing hours have not eased their fears. Worry, despair, and desolation are evident on every face. Inside the airport, passengers cling to their cell phones to leave a voicemail or send a text to their loved ones. Each one awaits a word of hope from the travel agency handling their case.
Children under five among the travelers wander in the hall. All airline counters are empty. Bags of passengers are still stored at the boarding gate of an airline. Passengers, who boarded early, couldn't travel. They had to disembark the plane and wait in the departure lounge. Two flights scheduled very early on Monday to Nicaragua were canceled, according to an employee of the National Airport Authority (AAN).
