The United States Embassy in Port-au-Prince, through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, has granted $33 million to the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide hot meals to approximately 75,000 Haitian students in pre-school and primary schools in the North and Northeast departments between 2024 and 2028, as stated in a press release on Monday, November 13, 2023.
This new donation comes from the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program (MGD) and aims to increase school enrollment and retention rates, promote good nutrition, water sanitation, hygiene practices, and enhance the learning experience of school-aged children by improving the quality of classroom teaching. The statement explained that this donation will be implemented in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education, emphasizing that "the current McGovern-Dole project, ending in 2024, has provided school meals to around 100,000 students in the North, Northeast, and Grand'Anse departments."
