The Canadian Ambassador to Haiti, André François Giroux, provided clarification regarding a sum of 42 million dollars, a portion of the 100 million dollars in support of the Haitian National Police (HNP). "Clarification: The 42.15 million Canadian dollars already disbursed and intended to support the HNP are distributed by the following organizations: 10 million by the UNDP; 14.7 million by the OAS; 14.05 million by the UNDP; 3.4 million by UNLIREC. Canada does not directly finance the government of Haiti, including the HNP," tweeted the Canadian diplomat on November 16th. He clarified after expressing himself in the newspaper Le Nouvelliste on November 7th.
"Our long-term mission is to strengthen the Haitian police so that it can fulfill its role," said the new Canadian Ambassador to Haiti, André François Giroux, during his visit to the newspaper. He also reminded that Canada has allocated 100 million dollars to the HNP. "Of this amount, 42.5 million dollars have already been spent on infrastructure, equipment, and training," informed the diplomat, who guaranteed that measures are being taken to ensure that this aid leaves a lasting impact. He also specified that projects capable of absorbing the remaining 100 million dollars are already on the table, but Canada does not want to rush into them.
