More than a year after the halt of Francisque mango exports to the USA, the Haitian government, the National Mango Exporters Association (ANEM), and U.S. officials are discussing an alternative—irradiation treatment—to facilitate the resumption of these exports, which annually accounted for between 10 and 15 million dollars, benefiting half a million people involved at various levels in the sector, according to information obtained by Le Nouvelliste on Thursday, December 21, 2023.
"We thank you for your letter dated October 23, 2023, in which you inquire about the use of irradiation as a phytosanitary measure to combat pests associated with the export of fresh fruits and vegetables (especially Haiti's mangoes) and the process of resuming the pre-clearance of fresh mangoes from Haiti to the United States using hot water treatment. We understand Haiti's keen interest in this matter and its importance. APHIS is writing to provide MARNDR with the information requested on these inquiries," wrote Ibrahim M. Shaqir, Associate Deputy Administrator Plant Protection and Quarantine, to the Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Rural Development on November 17.
