Haitians continue to leave the country to escape the hell of insecurity. Professionals from various fields are at the forefront of this migration, and doctors are no exception. Medical professionals of all specialties are leaving the country, from simple students to seasoned doctors. "For us Haitian doctors, the medical world, and especially the Haitian Medical Association, there is no improvement; on the contrary, the situation has worsened with the increase in kidnapping cases. Other factors exacerbate the departure of doctors, including humanitarian programs from the United States and Canada. The demographics of doctors are affected; young health professionals and seasoned doctors are forced to move to find peace of mind, body, and economic capital," complained Dr. Jean Ardouin Louis Charles, the Secretary-General of the Haitian Medical Association (AMH).
The number of available doctors in Haiti has significantly decreased due to this wave of migration. Dr. Louis Charles does not have recent data to support his observation, but he believes that doctors are targeted by criminals and are often counted among the victims. "Criminals kidnap doctors who are never released," he emphasized. "We cannot operate in this situation as it is. It must change," he demanded, reminding that these professionals need tranquility to make a proper diagnosis, carry out treatment, and disease prevention.
