In a joint statement released on February 2, 2024, Bruno Maes, the representative of UNICEF, and Tatiana Villegas-Zamora, the representative of UNESCO in Haiti, called for the respect of children's right to education in Haiti amid the rise of insecurity and socio-political instability. The representatives of the two UN agencies expressed concerns about the consequences of persistent armed violence and socio-political instability on the functioning of schools.
"UNICEF and UNESCO join their voices to draw attention to the devastating consequences of the frequent interruption and/or closure of many schools in the country, depriving thousands of children of their right to education. In recent months, some schools, especially in the Artibonite department and the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, have closed for fear of being trapped by the violence of armed groups. Many temporary closures of institutions have also been observed due to movements associated with certain political and/or union-related protests and demonstrations in various departments, including Grand'Anse and the North-East," the statement reads.
