On Friday, March 1, 2024, Kenya and Haiti officially finalized the deployment of 1,000 Kenyan police officers to Haiti. The reciprocal agreement, mandated by a Nairobi court in January, was signed by Cabinet Secretary for Interior Kithure Kindiki and Haitian Minister James P. Cadet, in the presence of Kenyan President William Ruto and Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry. "Today, March 1, 2024, I am pleased to inform you that Prime Minister Ariel Henry and I witnessed the signing of this instrument. We also discussed the next steps to accelerate the deployment," read a statement released by President Ruto. "I take this opportunity to reiterate Kenya's commitment to the success of this multinational mission. We believe it is a historic duty as peace in Haiti is good for the world as a whole," the statement concluded. In Haiti, the Ministry of Culture and Communication officially announced the signing of the document between the two countries via a statement. According to the statement, "this Memorandum of Understanding covers several areas of collaboration, including combating organized crime, general criminal investigations, counterterrorism and radical extremism, border security management, protection of strategic infrastructure, disaster management, and anti-kidnapping efforts." "The signing of this Memorandum of Understanding, at 5:15 a.m. Haiti time, between the two republics, effectively launches the deployment of assistance," stated the Haitian Ministry of Communication.
