Late on the evening of Monday, March 11, 2024, Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced his departure along with that of his government.
In a pre-recorded message, Dr. Henry stated, "The government I lead is stepping down immediately after the installation of the Transitional Presidential Council."
After ten days of silence, away from the country, Ariel Henry announced his departure from the Prime Minister's office along with his government.
"For more than a week, our country has experienced an increase in acts of violence against the population. Assassinations, attacks on law enforcement, systematic looting, and destruction of public and private buildings," Ariel Henry described.
The outgoing Prime Minister expressed sadness and outrage at the acts of assassination. "The government I lead cannot remain indifferent to this situation. As I have always said, no sacrifice is too great for our country, Haiti," he said.
"After a Cabinet meeting tonight, the government I lead accepts the establishment of a Transitional Presidential Council. The members of this Council will be chosen after agreement among the various sectors of national life," Henry declared.
"The government I lead will step down immediately after the installation of the Council. It will continue to handle current affairs until the appointment of a Prime Minister and a government," he announced.
According to Ariel Henry, Haiti needs peace, stability, sustainable development, and the reconstruction of its democratic institutions. He called on the population to remain calm and to contribute to the establishment of peace and stability in the country "as quickly as possible for the good of the country."
Ariel Henry thanked the Haitian people and his government. He believes he has served the country with wisdom, integrity, and honor.
This decision by the Prime Minister comes hours after an agreement between political actors and civil society under the auspices of CARICOM to establish a seven-member Presidential Council.
