After an intense day of negotiations on March 11, 2024, Haitian political and civil society actors agreed to create a seven-member Presidential Council to lead the transition and hold elections. This agreement was facilitated by Caricom heads of government. The private business sector is among the groups that must appoint a representative to this structure. This Tuesday, just hours after the announcement of this agreement, the Haiti Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HCCI) lamented that it was not invited to the discussions. "The Chamber wishes to inform the national and international public that the HCCI, as the representative body of the entire private business sector in Haiti, was not contacted by the parties involved in this search for a solution. It emphasizes that the private sector's contribution is essential for restoring economic and social stability in the country," the note reads. "The HCCI remains attentive to the developing situation and hopes for a swift and peaceful resolution to the crisis. It remains convinced that a favorable outcome will benefit all stakeholders and the Haitian population. The HCCI reaffirms its commitment to Haiti's economic development and prosperity and stands ready to support any process aimed at restoring peace and stability in Haiti," concludes the note signed by HCCI President, Monode Joseph.
