After the "soup joumou," Haiti now aims to inscribe compas on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Haiti's permanent delegation to UNESCO submitted the candidacy of compas to be recognized as intangible cultural heritage of humanity this week.
Already classified as Haitian intangible cultural heritage, compas aims to play in the big leagues. "Konpa/compas is a form of music and dance that represents an important part of Haiti's intangible cultural heritage. In all its varieties - compas direct, Hounsi, Boule de feu, Mélasse, Cadence Rampas, Makyavèl Karamèl, Digital, Stéréo, Manba, Malouk, Kèkal, Timtim, Funk, Love, etc. - it provides a space for recognition and celebration for Haitians, both inside and outside the country," detailed Haiti's permanent delegation to UNESCO in a statement announcing the submission of the compas candidacy to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
