The sanatorium hospital, which is a reference in tuberculosis treatment, has been closed for over six months due to the presence of gangs in the Carrefour-Feuilles neighborhood. Dr. Louis Charles laments the current inability of the hospital to diagnose and treat patients. He mentions that despite the efforts made by the state to establish drug distribution centers at the State University Hospital of Haiti (HUEH) and at the Saint François de Sales Hospital, these institutions are now inaccessible due to their location in dangerous areas. He reports that a new center has been established in Ruelle Berne.
Dr. Louis Charles also emphasizes that people with tuberculosis are among the internally displaced persons in the country and are at risk of developing resistance to the disease due to their inability to regularly follow their treatment. He warns of the risk of disease transmission in communities due to often precarious living conditions and overcrowding in camps. He therefore calls for urgent state intervention to identify infected individuals living in displaced camps and to put them on treatment. Dr. Louis Charles suggests the establishment of facilities for sputum tests to check for drug resistance and thus protect community members. Dr. Louis Charles announces that efforts are underway to find a temporary location to relocate the sanatorium hospital and resume tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment activities.
