June 6, 2024, marks the centenary of the Directorate General of Taxes (DGI). It's been only a hundred years for this institution, which was meant to be the backbone of the state, alongside the security forces and customs.

Customs and the armed forces have existed since 1804. The General Administration of Contributions, which would become the Directorate General of Taxes, had to wait for the American occupation to be established in 1924.

The army gave birth to the nation. It has always been the darling of leaders, and very early on, the Haitian state knew how to collect its dues on exports of goods. For a long time, it was mainly from exports alone.
