Port-au-Prince, one of the most populous Francophone cities in the Americas, celebrates its 275th anniversary on June 13, 2024. This milestone is almost anecdotal, given that the historic downtown of Port-au-Prince has been reduced to its barest form. The state, through its institutions, as well as residents and businesses, have fled or have been forced to flee the city, leaving it to criminal gangs who now impose their rule.
The Prime Minister's office was the first institution to leave the downtown area. This "move" occurred in September 2019, during the "peyi lok" under the administration of Jean Michel Lapin. At that time, the Prime Minister refrained from going to the tumultuous Bicentenaire area and decided to relocate his office to his official residence in Musseau. Under Ariel Henry, the state permanently abandoned the Bicentenaire office, renovating the Villa d’Accueil in Musseau.
