More than three months after the installation of the Transitional Presidential Council and two months after the formation of the government, progress in restoring security remains elusive. Despite the presence of Kenyan forces on the ground and a change in leadership within the Haitian National Police (PNH), criminals continue to occupy strategic points across the country, particularly the national highways. These roads, once used by the majority of the population to travel from one place to another, have become difficult to access due to the actions of criminal groups, impacting the movement of people and goods within the country.
In an interview with Le Nouvelliste on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, Méhu Changeux of the Association of Haitian Owners and Drivers (APCH) confirmed that the public transportation sector is struggling in Haiti due to the actions of criminal groups. "Traffic has been at a standstill on National Route 2 for a month because of clashes between law enforcement and bandits in Gressier. The southern region cannot travel to Port-au-Prince by road and vice versa. Those who need to go to Port-au-Prince are forced to crowd into boats transporting cargo trucks. They have no other choice," complained the union leader.
