Haitian authorities are moving from words to action in response to the wave of sanctions imposed on several Haitians, including gang members, politicians, and business figures, who are accused of threatening "peace, security, and stability in Haiti." "For some time now, certain countries have been imposing economic sanctions. We believe that this issue must be addressed by the government in a way that examines the nature and scope of these sanctions, so that appropriate national measures can be taken based on the facts. In this context, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, under the government's instructions, has written to four countries—the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the Dominican Republic—because they have the lists of sanctioned individuals. We have asked them to officially provide us with these lists, as when we arrived at the ministry, the archives did not allow us to trace back to previously undertaken actions. We are awaiting responses from these countries," explained Justice Minister Carlos Hercule.
Attorney Hercule revealed that the justice system will take action against the individuals identified if there is evidence supporting the sanctions. "If there are facts underlying these sanctions, legal action will be initiated against all targeted individuals," declared Justice Minister Carlos Hercule. "Regardless of the person, if society accuses them of wrongdoing, they must be held accountable. I believe that everyone, no matter their position—whether they have served the state or are in the business sector—must answer if they are accused of something. We believe this is a very important step."
