As the closed-door talks had been underway for over 15 minutes between President Lula and Prime Minister Conille, Voltaire arrived at the Brazilian Mission’s headquarters at 747 3rd Avenue, New York. Voltaire and Jean-Baptiste, a former Haitian ambassador to Brazil, made their way to the meeting room. Some Haitian journalists present in the hallway witnessed the scene. However, they were stopped by Brazilian security officers.
Voltaire explained to the security staff in both French and Portuguese that he was the President of Haiti and wished to participate in the discussions. The agents informed him that no additional participants were expected for the meeting. A security officer went inside to check with the Brazilian officials to see if Voltaire was anticipated. The response was negative. In an unusual twist, the security team even tried to search for Voltaire’s name on Google, only to inform him that his name did not appear in the search results as Haiti's president.
