The metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince is facing a new wave of assaults by criminal groups in several neighborhoods this week. The attacks began on the evening of October 16, 2024, on Magloire Ambroise Street. Witnesses told Le Nouvelliste that criminals stormed the area, setting houses on fire and driving out residents. At least one person, a motorcyclist, was killed during the attack.
On October 17, gang members in downtown Port-au-Prince disrupted a ceremony commemorating the 218th anniversary of the assassination of Jean-Jacques Dessalines. Gunfire forced members of the Transitional Presidential Council and high-ranking state officials to flee after placing a wreath at the Haitian National Pantheon Museum (MUPANAH). The unrest at Champ de Mars also prompted the government to relocate the swearing-in ceremony of the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) members, initially scheduled at the Court of Cassation, to the School of Magistrates on October 18.
