After two planes from Spirit Airlines and JetBlue were hit by gunfire on Monday, November 11, the United States issued a 30-day ban on commercial flights to Haiti. This decision was made by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Tuesday, November 12. According to the Notice to Air Mission (NOTAM) obtained by the newspaper, all U.S. civil aviation operations are prohibited over Haitian territory and airspace below 10,000 feet due to ongoing security risks associated with the country’s instability.

Applicability: “This ban applies to all air carriers and commercial operators; anyone exercising the privileges of an airman certificate issued by the FAA, except for those operating U.S.-registered aircraft for a foreign air carrier; and all operators of U.S.-registered civil aircraft, except when the operator of such aircraft is a foreign air carrier,” states the document.
