After a three-day visit to Haiti, UNICEF spokesperson James Elder, who witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of the security and humanitarian crisis on children, spoke with Le Nouvelliste. In 2024, gang violence affected 2.7 million people in Haiti, including 1.6 million women and children. Nearly 94,000 children are now living in makeshift displacement sites. According to UNICEF, three million children will require humanitarian assistance in 2025.

According to James Elder, the impact of insecurity on the country is massive. “Insecurity affects everything. It hinders access to education, healthcare, and more. It disrupts the functioning of the country. This is the main problem,” he stated.
