While UNESCO chose the theme “Every Language Counts” for this 25th edition, AKA celebrated the day under the theme “The Haitian Creole Language: A Tool of Resistance for the Haitian People.” According to AKA President Rosilia François Corneille, this theme was selected to show the world how deeply Haitians are attached to their native language, just as they are to their homeland.
"February 21 is a date that should remind us of the struggle to secure Creole’s rightful place in all aspects of society. We must recognize that Creole is a tool of resistance for the Haitian people. No one should tolerate linguistic injustice or discrimination," stated Corneille, who was recently appointed as AKA’s president. She also denounced school directors and teachers who continue to punish students for speaking Creole on school grounds, as well as public and private institutions that discriminate against people for using the language.
