OCHA painted a grim picture of the humanitarian situation in Haiti, which continued to deteriorate in 2024. Armed violence has caused immeasurable suffering, particularly for women and children, triggered the mass displacement of citizens, and contributed to plunging nearly half of the Haitian population into acute food insecurity. According to the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, the needs are immense. More than half of the population—6 million people—require humanitarian assistance this year, an increase of more than 11% compared to March 2024, when 5.5 million people were in need of humanitarian aid.

Human rights violations have reached alarming levels, with 5,600 people killed—an increase of more than 20% compared to 2023—1,500 cases of kidnappings recorded, 5,857 cases of gender-based violence, and a 70% rise between mid-2023 and mid-2024 in the number of children forcibly recruited by armed groups. More than one million people are internally displaced, a 48% increase compared to September 2024.
