The Heads of State and Government of CARICOM and the U.S. Department of State oppose a change of governance in Haiti dictated by criminal groups. These positions come in a context of increasing gang attacks in Port-au-Prince and threats against the southern part of the country. A protest demanding the departure of the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT) is also scheduled for Wednesday, April 16, 2025.
According to the Miami Herald, it was the president of the CPT, Fritz Alphonse Jean, who alerted CARICOM over the past weekend. “On Saturday, the president of the Haitian Presidential Council, Fritz Alphonse Jean, spoke with the current president of CARICOM, the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, who then contacted the U.S. Department of State,” reported the American media outlet.
