For years, Haiti and its elites have consumed concepts—ignored them, adopted them, used them up, distorted them, DEBASED them, misrepresented them, violated them.

One no longer knows whether it is modernity that refuses the country, or if it is the Haitian politicians who are resistant to the principles without which any encounter between reality and concept is impossible.
