Haiti has reached a new record as the country grapples with escalating violence from criminal groups. According to a new report from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), nearly 1.3 million people are currently displaced within Haiti—an increase of 24% since December 2024. This surge represents the highest number ever recorded of people displaced by violence in the country.
“Behind these numbers are countless individuals whose suffering is immeasurable: children, mothers, elderly people—many of whom have been forced to flee their homes multiple times, often empty-handed, and who are now living in conditions that are neither safe nor sustainable,” said Amy Pope, Director General of the IOM.
“We must act urgently. The strength of the Haitian people is admirable, but resilience cannot be their only refuge. This crisis must not become the new normal.”
