In Saut-d’Eau, Haiti’s quintessential pilgrimage site, Mont-Carmel has a particular look this year. On July 16, instead of welcoming thousands of Catholic and Vodouist pilgrims in search of enlightenment, purification, and blessings, the miraculous Virgin was forced to receive three of the main leaders of the criminal coalition Viv Ansanm: Jimmy Chérisier, known as Barbecue, Jeff Larose, known as Jeff Gwo Lwa, and Wilson Joseph, known as Lanmò San Jou.

They were filmed handing out bills to beggars—a perfect illustration of their attempt to present themselves as “men of goodwill.” Jimmy Chérisier even said he was happy to be back in Saut-d’Eau, after more than 10 years.
