On Magik 9, Wednesday, July 16, 2025, the Director General of the National Airport Authority (AAN), Yves Ducarmel François, stated that a $100 million envelope had been approved by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for expansion work at the Antoine Simon Airport in Les Cayes. Le Nouvelliste was able to inquire with sources close to the IDB and the government on the matter. All of them denied this statement made by the AAN Director General.
According to a contact within the IDB, there is no $100 million envelope allocated to the Cayes airport. The source emphasized that no amount can yet be discussed without a master plan. “We are in the process of finalizing the master plan. We’ll have the first results by the end of the year. It will be finalized in the first quarter of 2026. For now, the amount will not exceed $50 million. That will be the maximum. We’ll extend the runway, rebuild the terminal, and improve the access road, which is in very poor condition. There will be other projects with the Cayes airport, but not a single $100 million investment,” this source explained to the newspaper, adding that a master plan is also necessary before determining what to do at the Hugo Chávez Airport in Cap-Haïtien.
