Seventy years after its creation, compas direct continues to resonate and captivate. Proof of this: a series of concerts is currently being organized, marking in particular a true revolution led by women in this emblematic rhythm of Haitian culture. For Mario De Volcy, an iconic figure of the movement, this represents a major victory for female artists.
“Just ten years ago, it was mainly singers and musicians from the Caribbean who were dominating the Haitian market, giving noteworthy concerts. Today, we can see that local women have fully entered into compas direct, and the game has shifted,” he says. According to him, women are now more numerous than men on the compas stage, to the point where one might wonder how many male artists are still managing to keep pace.
