During a visit to Haiti last week, the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, admitted that the humanitarian response in Haiti was a failure. According to him, the main reason is the decline in humanitarian aid funding, with donors—particularly the United States—being less generous. “We have a funding problem. Less than 12% of the necessary funds (908 million dollars) have been disbursed to save four million lives. We are finding that the international community has become less generous. This does not concern only Haiti. The situation is the same almost everywhere. It is very difficult for us,” explained Tom Fletcher in an interview with Le Nouvelliste on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

Mr. Fletcher, who met with people displaced due to gang violence, said he observed needs in food, drinking water, medical care… “Most importantly, they need hope,” said the senior UN official, who called on donors not to abandon Haiti.
