A large hall at Villa Cana in Cap-Haïtien pulsed last Saturday with rare emotion. Amid sustained applause, songs, and tears of joy, 27 new doctors and nurse specialists of the Paul Farmer cohort—under the direction of the Department of Medical Education of Zanmi Lasante (ZL)—officially completed their hospital residency. A ceremony that went beyond a simple academic rite: it symbolized collective perseverance in a country where public health struggles to stay standing.

Drawn from seven specialty programs—internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, family medicine, surgery, obstetrics-gynecology, and nurse anesthesia—these new specialists are strengthening a Haitian health system critically short of human resources. Their training, carried out in often perilous conditions, illustrates the vital importance of retaining young doctors in the country.
