The organization Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) announced on October 14, 2025, the permanent closure of its emergency center located in Turgeau. The NGO cited the worsening insecurity in downtown Port-au-Prince as the reason for its decision. “For several weeks, the area surrounding the center of Port-au-Prince has become the scene of regular armed violence. If medical activities were to resume in this hospital, located in the immediate vicinity of these clashes, they would be severely compromised by the level of risk to patients and medical staff. The building has already been struck several times by stray bullets due to its proximity to the combat zones, making the resumption of activities too dangerous for both patients and staff,” declared Jean-Marc Biquet, MSF Head of Mission in Haiti.

As a reminder, the Turgeau Emergency Center had already suspended its activities since March 2025 following a security incident which, according to MSF’s statement, endangered the lives of its personnel. “Since the suspension, several ballistic protection assessments have been carried out to identify appropriate safety solutions, but none have provided a sufficient level of security to allow the resumption of our activities,” the organization noted.
