Under oppressive heat, packed closely together in a slow-moving line, dozens of citizens wait patiently in the courtyard of Pétion-Ville National High School. It is nearly 2:00 p.m. Some have been there since the morning in the hope of registering on the electoral roll. A few meters away, two agents from the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP), wearing blue vests and caps in the institution’s colors, fill out paper forms before entering the information into a tablet. This is where voter registration operations for the 2026–2027 elections have been taking place since July 20.
Haiti’s last elections were held in 2016, and since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, the country has experienced a succession of transitional governments. This year, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé announced that elections would be held in 2026–2027. One of the new features of the process is the registration of citizens wishing to vote on the electoral roll. Le Nouvelliste went to Pétion-Ville to observe how the operation was proceeding.
