Twenty days after his abduction in Gressier, Joseph Willard Vancol was found dead on September 9, 2026. Aged 73, the coordinator of ITECA’s training center and director of Ti Boukan FM leaves behind several decades devoted to communities. Abducted on August 20 during an armed attack on the training center of the Institute of Technology and Facilitation (ITECA), in Petit-Boukan, the center had gone nearly three weeks without any news of him. According to ITECA, a team from the institution, accompanied by officers from the Haitian National Police (PNH), found his body in a wooded area located on the grounds of the center.
ITECA Executive Director Professor Chenet Jean-Baptiste explains that access to the site remains difficult because of insecurity. He reports that the security agent and the caretaker, who were present during the attack that led to the victim’s disappearance, were physically and psychologically assaulted by the armed bandits before narrowly being released. These individuals later took part in the searches that led to the discovery of Vancol’s body. The training center, the Ti Boukan FM offices and the documentation center were vandalized during the attack. Several pieces of equipment were also reportedly taken by the assailants, according to Chenet Jean-Baptiste.
