Hunger in their bellies, bedbugs, and an endless solitude: this is the daily life of children in a care center meant to protect them in Carrefour, reveals Johnassen Géraly Millien in his thesis defended on February 17, 2025, at the Faculty of Human Sciences (FASCH). This undergraduate thesis in Social Work focuses on the "social vulnerability of childhood in light of the quality of institutional care in Haiti." He closely studied the case of children received at the Carrefour care center between 2021 and 2023, as part of a program aimed at reintegrating them into society. Before a jury composed of Séraphin Jean Denis, president, Marjorie Brutus, thesis director, and Jérôme Paul Eddy Lacoste, critical reader, he received a score of 80 out of 100, with high honors.
According to Johnassen Géraly Millien, the Carrefour care center does not protect the children it is supposed to save. Worse, it further sinks them into the same vulnerability it claims to combat. This conclusion is not a baseless accusation. It is based on several months of investigation conducted directly in the field, involving the institution's staff, young adults still present in the center, and children aged 14 to 17. The author is well-acquainted with the place, having completed an academic internship there in 2022. This experience profoundly affected him, and it is precisely this indignation that drove him to transform his observation into rigorous research.
