"Overall, 5.2 million people are in need of emergency humanitarian assistance, including nearly 3 million children. Around 4.9 million people are struggling to access food, and over 115,000 children under the age of five are expected to suffer from life-threatening malnutrition this year, marking a 30% increase compared to last year. The healthcare system is on the brink of collapse, schools have been attacked by armed groups, and civilians are terrorized and deprived of their means of livelihood," stated the joint press release by the World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF following the visit of the directors of both organizations to Haiti.

One may doubt the statistics, find them staggering, or attempt to diminish the magnitude of the disaster by subtracting a million here or there, or tens of thousands elsewhere, but the overall picture remains the same. Our destitution is unacceptable.
